I am drawn to found objects, whether it be rocks, driftwood or flea market “finds”. I like the patina and history of old things and have a collection of antique papers collected from friends, auctions, junk store, etc. I layer, weave, and sometimes sew paper together to create something new out of something old. There is a subtle poetic tension in that, something mysterious, like an archeological artifact or relic.
During the first days and months of the Pandemic, I made a small collage a day and continue this practice today. I frequently begin my studio time by sitting in front of my sewing machine and stitching together a small collage with scraps of paper I have lying around. It helps me get my creative energy flowing and engaged in my work for that day.
