Femmage

This body of work is inspired by a classic text from the 1970’s Feminist Art Movement, “Waste Not Want Not: An Inquiry into what Women Saved and Assembled—FEMMAGE”, written by Mariam Schapiro and Melissa Meyer. The characteristics of “Femmage” or Feminist Collage, a word invented by Schapiro and Meyer, includes activities as they were practiced by women using traditional women's techniques to achieve their art: sewing, piecing, hooking, cutting, appliquéing, cooking and the like - activities were also engaged in by men but assigned in history to women. These decorative functional objects women made often spoke in a secret language and bore covert imagery.
